“Dreams” Mixed Media Canvas

Hello Creatives!

Keri Sallee, DT Member, here.

Today…it’s all about letting go of your doubt and following your dreams!

To make my background, I used TCW503  Stencil “Signals” by Rhonda Palazzari. I have to admit…this stencil has always intimidated me. I never really knew what to do with it! Why I chose this stencil for this project was the contrast of straightline…almost masculine background with the feminine colors and embellishments I planned on using.

{On a funny note..I showed this stench to my kids and they said “hey…that looks like a Pokeball & the X-Man Symbol! LOL}

Signals Stencil

For my color, I mixed Whipped Spackle from Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft with 3 colors of Gelatos: (L to R) Aqua Dolce, Watermelon & Margarita Mix. To mix them, I used a small spatula to cut a small chunk of my gelato off the stick and then used the same spatula to smoosh and smear (those are technical terms! HAHA!)  the whipped spackle and gelatos together until completely incorporated.

HINT: If your gelato appears a little dry when you cut off a small piece, hitting it with a heat gun for a few seconds with help it mix better. Just soften it…don’t melt it! 🙂

I then laid my 12 x 12 Stencil over my 8×8 canvas panel, making sure to keep it straight. I used an old hotel key card to scrape my colored Whipped Spackle through my stencil, ransoming alternating the colors.

Don’t try to be perfect. You can see I have some white spaces peeking through my colors.

Next…add layers! Have fun with it…splatter..smear…stamps…whatever! I added layers of a stamped diamond in “Watermelon” in Adirondack Ink, various spray inks from Imagine Crafts and acrylic paint dabbers from Adirondack to make my background messy and grungy, but still keeping with my girly colors.

I topped my background off with a bunch of fun embellishments like washi tape, corrugated cardboard, Junque & Gems, Stems and Flowers from Marion Smith Designs, misc. flowers and a chipboard word I sprayed with Imagine Crafts IRESISTables spray ink.

TCW July 2015_Dreams_Flowers I added words printed from a word program to finish my quote.

I hope you enjoyed today’s project.

  1. Gorgeous canvas. I have that stencil on my art table but have not used it. Thanks for the inspiration!
