Urban Landscape Art Journal Page

Hello everyone! This is Rachel Kleinman here with my first ever post for The Crafter’s Workshop Design Team! I am so thrilled to be on this team and honored to be included among such talented people. My very first post is an art journal page dedicated to the amazing TCW team I met a couple weeks ago in New York.

This journal spread uses a total of 7 stencils, but you can see the star of the design is the ‘Urban Landscape’. I’ll walk you through the steps to create this page, and I have even put together a Flipagram with every single step shown.

I started with a wash of blue and white acrylic paint to cover the entire background. I let every single layer dry completely before moving on to the next step. I started with layering some stencils, and I try to use stencils with a larger opening at the base of the layers (TCW288 – Pointy Circles and TCW473 – Fireworks)

Next I added some bold pink flowers using TCW540 – Striped Flower Circle. I only wanted the flower and circle images to show, so I carefully dabbed on paint using a firm stipple brush.

I finished the background laying by adding some script text from TCW550s – Mini Thoughts in a silver paint. I also added some maroon spray ink over both pages to tie them together. Now I can move onto the Urban Landscape!

I really love this stencil and I know it’ll be used in a scrapbook page in the near future! For my art journal I used both layers, so I painted the negative space first completely in black. Once it was completely dry I went over with white paint to add the line details to the building.

You can see I finished off the buildings by adding a shadow and darkening the bottom of the pages. I wanted to add more black to the top of the page for balance, so I included some clocks from TCW201 – Time Travel to the corners. I also used modeling paste over TCW345s – Confetti throughout the layout.

I drew the quote on tissue paper using a brush and India Ink and adhered the tissue paper to my journal with matte medium.

As promised, I created a 30 second Flipagram that shows you every step of creating this page. Click here to watch it!

Thanks for joining me for my first TCW post! I hope I’ve inspired you to get a little painty in your journals and just have fun with your favorite stencils!
