Fake doodles

Hi there, Sanna here today to share with you a layout I created. I recently made one with lots of doodling/zentangles on it (see here for details) and while I was creating it, I really fell in love with the vivid black and white background. So I figured, I could create a sort of “fake doodling look” on a layout by using a black ink spray and a stencil.

Here is what I did:Sanna Lippert

First I took the “Circles in Lines” 12×12 inch stencil and placed it over a piece of white cardstock. Then I just sprayed a relatively thick layer of black spray ink over the stencil, but left the right side of the stencil partly unmisted. This way the pattern vanishes towards the other side of the page. I let the color dry properly and immediately cleaned my stencil – otherwise I would have had black spray ink all over the place :).

Next I took some Distress Paints and pressed big moist splodges of paint onto the background and then tilted the page so that the color could form driplets. I always did one color after another and in between made sure that the previous layer was all dry. This takes a while, but it is worth the wait.

Next I took a lighter and a silver wax crayon and heated the crayon under the fire until it started to melt. I then immediately shaked/tapped the crayon so that the melted wax created splodges onto the cardstock. This is a really cool and fun way to use a wax crayon, but remember to be careful with the lighter and don´t burn yourself!

Now all I needed to do was to add some embellishments, a photo, the title and some journaling onto my layout. Here is how it turned out:

As you can see, there are some buttons here and there. I happen to have a few (understatement of the day..) in my stash, so this was the perfect spot to destash a little. The colors of the buttons match the Distress Paints perfectly!

I´ve also used some wood veneer here and there and added some sticker words to add to the journaling of the page. And some matching spray ink color splodges also had to accompany the Distress Paints in the end. You know me, cannot live without color splatters :).

I know this is not REAL doodling, but the stencil pattern and the black color make it look almost like doodling at first glance. And besides, I love combining black with bright colors, so I had a really good time creating this background. How about you, what is your favorite combination at the moment?

      1. Oops spell check changed Sanna to Wanna. Apologies-nothing worse than getting someone’s name wrong.
