BACK TO SCHOOL Skirt

Hello! I can’t believe that summer is over!  Hope you all had many fun adventures:)

Today’s post is a project I did for my Granddaughter Annabelle’s first day of preschool.  She is soooo excited, and recently told me that she would start school as soon as the leaves started to fall off the trees -or September 4th, which ever came first:)

I wanted to make a fun outfit in honor of her big day.  The Crafters Workshop’s new BRUSH ALPHABET STENCIL would be perfect for this project!PM:TCW:AUGUST:SKIRTThis is the pattern I used, below…found on Etsy at

I definitely made a few minor changes…and although this pattern is done extremely well (LOTS of GREAT photos!) I am still challenged when it comes to following written directions!

Besides that, I am a very basic, self taught
“seamstress”….hmmm…I mean beginner:)

FYI- I made the apron completely separate. (This pattern has it attached)

Annabelle LOVES to help in the kitchen and LOVES all things alphabet, so I wanted her to be able to use the apron anytime….so I made it “detached” from the skirt.

The pattern is adorable, but the STARS of this skirt & apron, are the stenciled fabrics.

The Crafter’s Workshop Stencils used for this project are below

After mixing up the colors  (“going with the back to school fall colors!”) I added textile medium to increase the flow, increase the drying time, and assure a permanent color once heat set with an iron.

I cut all my pattern pieces out of inexpensive white muslin, and then added detail with paint and stencils.

With an iron, I heat set each piece once dried, and then followed the pattern directions to construct the skirt and apron.  NOTE: I decided to keep the apron separate from the skirt (as I mentioned above)

I found this cut top at Kids Gap…it matches the yellow stenciled letters and apron print perfectly!BACK TO SCHOOL SKIRT/ SUE CARROLLThe skirt is a bit stiff, after using orange (over that whole section) and then brown on top of that…2 layers of paint. (The bottom band made with the stencil  beaded curtain is not stiff at all) To make this main section a bit more soft, choose an orange fabric for the main body of the skirt and stencil with brown paint…eliminating the 2 layers of paint.

It’s cutest on Annabelle:)

Stencils are a FANTASTIC way to add a personal touch to anything you sew!

It’s a joy to share with you!  Thank you for taking the time to “stop by!”
