1 Stencil 4 Ways Series

TCW-1-Stencil-4-Ways

Welcome to our new series.  Each month on the 14th we will feature a list of projects created by our Guest Designers and a few members of our Design Team where they used one stencil in a few different ways.   We will highlight four different ways to use the selected stencil.

This month we are featuring TCW 280 Blazonry. Checks out the projects created by our designers, Miriam, Keri, Sanna, & Kathi.

#1.

Hi!  Miriam here. For my project, I thought the Blazonry would be the perfect stencil to use to create a layout from our vacation to Vermont last summer.

I first traced the design on my paper and then using a craft knife, cut out some of the shapes to create windows/frames for my photos.  This is obviously not the sheet I ended up using because I decided I liked the gray better, but it gives you an idea of how the layout came together.

I added some doodling around the cut out windows as well as on the insides of the negative cut pieces which I wanted to incorporate into the design as popped out pieces for some dimension.

To brighten the layout I also cut out some of the shapes from white cardstock and I used those for additional journaling spaces.

The photos were adhered to a base page, the stenciled/cut sheet was adhered over top and I added a stitched frame around the edges.

This was a really easy layout together, and I love how it focuses right in on the photos in a way that isn’t overwhelming from a photo perspective….I was able to incorporate six 4×6 photos into this layout!

I am so excited about participating in today’s blog on The Crafter’s Workshop.

I am always looking for ways to expand the uses of my products, so I love the idea of this series “1 Stencil 4 ways.”

Today, I want to take you through a mixed media piece I recently made featuring The Crafter’s Workshop Stencil #280 Blazonry, designed by Julie Balzer.  Here is what I came up with:

Can you see my little secret? I actually used my stencil 2 different ways on this one piece.

Wanna see how?

I made this little Snap Guide to show you how!

Check out How to Create a Mixed Media Piece Using 1 Stencil 2 Ways by Keri Sallee on Snapguide.

Here are a few closeups:

My butterfly was made using the new Mod Podge Melts and Molds from Plaid.

You can see that I tried to keep my patterns contrasting with the neighboring patterns to keep the eye moving (eyes get bored easy! LOL!)

Doilies go so well with the “girly” feel of this piece!

I added a couple of pieces of “film strips” that came with the Crate Paper Portrait Kit I used (which…on a side note…if found for $1.99 at Tuesday morning! 3 sheets of die cuts and 12 pieces of paper!)

Thanks for checking out my project! I hope it inspired you too look at your supplies with a new eye!

Until next time…remember to make your art intentional…not an afterthought.

XOXO,

KERI Sallee

P.S. Check out the Snap Guide for a complete supply list!

Hi there, Sanna here today with a special and quite a long and material heavy post. I want to share with you four ways to use one stencil. I chose to create four layouts with different stencil techniques on them. This is what I did:

1. Misting: For the first layout I created a DIY patterned paper with the stencil and some ink sprays. I used both the positive and the negative image of the stencil and ended up with two different background papers. I will for sure use the second one for another project some time later :).

And this is how the finished layout with the DIY background paper looks like. I´ve also fussy cut some patterned paper to match the misted background pattern and used the stencil as a cutting guide.

2. Molding paste: For my second layout I used molding/struckture paste. I used both the paste as it is (plain) and also mixed a second tone by adding some acrylic paint onto the paste. I then wiped the pastes onto the background thru the stencil.

Notice how I´ve applied the leftover paste onto a piece of white cardstock. That way nothing goes to waste and I can use those patterns on another projects later.

And here is the finished layout.

3. Doodling guide: For the third layout I created some additional patterns onto the background paper by using the stencil as a doodling guide. I also used some blue paste fussy cut shapes for additional detail (these were leftovers from the previous project).

And this is the finished page:

4. Stitching guide: For the fourth layout I used the stencil in a similar way as on the previous page, but instead of drawing a pattern, I stitched it. So the stencil worked as a stitching guide this time. Then all I needed to do was to add some holes and stitch with twine to create a background pattern.

And here is the layout:

Since this post is already very photo heavy, I´ve taped a little STEP-BY-STEP VIDEO for you to watch. That way you will see each and every step of the process. Hope you enjoy and get inspired to use those stencils in various ways!!! There are so many ways to use then and I suggest you stay tuned for more ideas coming up!! My lovely design team colleagues have been busy too 🙂 !

Happy stenciling,
Sanna

#4.

And Kathi used the same stencil with four diffferent mediums.

Hello crafters my name is Kathi Mann, I was given a stencil & was asked to use it using 4 different techniques. It was time to put my creative imagination to work. I enjoyed working with the different mediums, textures, colors to create these 12 X 12 canvas layouts.

I used the stencil TCW “280 Blazony” four different ways, each producing a different look & textures.

1. The technique I used was speckling paste and colorwash.

Spackling paste (640x480)

Spackling paste 2

2. On the second layout the technique I used heavy gel with perfect pearls.

Technique 2

Technique 2a

3. On the third canvas I outlined each section of the stencil with enamel accents then colored each one with a different color alcohol ink

Technique 3

Technique 3a

4. on the fourth canvas the technique I used was a very simple technique, I sprayed the stencil with Lindy’s Stamp Gang. “Star Burst Spray” My Mijito Green,

Thanks for stopping by and looking at what you can do using the same stencil with different mediums achieving a different look on each. Be sure to check out the rest of the designers & their designs.

Make sure to join us next month on August 14 to see what stencil we use in four different ways.

  1. I absolutely love this stencil and it’s shape. so many fun uses. Everyone did a great job in using and showing it’s versatility. Now, if we just have someone come out with a punch in this shape…I am not a fussy cutter…but I most certainly would do it with my photos. but a punch would be best. LOL…thanks for the fun inspirations ladies
