Super Gloss Heavy Gel and Stencils

A happy weekend to you!

Today I’d like to share another medium I like to use with TCW stencils: super gloss heavy gel. This gel works beautifully with stencils because it holds it’s shape well and dries clear with a nice high gloss. So, you can make the stencil effect either obvious or subtle. Also, since it mildly resists watercolors, you can make some really wonderful backgrounds.

MiaeRowe_TCW_Paradise (1)Here’s how I made this page…..

MiaeRowe_TCW_Paradise (9)Cover parts of cardstock (CS) with gesso. Take acrylic paint, a dry sponge, and stencil TCW336s Mini Letters Collage onto your CS.

MiaeRowe_TCW_Paradise (10)Take TCW 389 Fancy Feathers and 389s Mini Fancy Feathers and apply the super gloss heavy gel medium over your page. You can add any stamping you’d like on this step or before you apply the gel medium. Be sure to use a solvent based ink if you don’t want your stamped image to blur. I used a hexagon stamp from VLVS stamps.

MiaeRowe_TCW_Paradise (7)After the gel is dry, use your watercolors to paint over the gel medium. The colors will gather more along the outline of the stenciled image and less over the gel…this is the one time it might actually be fun to watch paint dry!

MiaeRowe_TCW_Paradise (8)For this page I really wanted to emphasize the feathers so I outlined them with black india ink. After this I flicked paint splatter everywhere (as I love that look) and then I added flecks of Tattered Angels High Impact Pigment in black and Tattered Angels High Impact Metallic in Platinum. I was so busy flicking paint, I forgot to take photos…sorry!

MiaeRowe_TCW_Paradise (5)To add some dimensional embellishments I decided to cut circles from this lovely thick canvas from Canvas Corp. First I used acrylic paint and TCW337s Mini Circle Regiment, then I stamped over the circles with a word stamp.

MiaeRowe_TCW_Paradise (6)Next I cut out the circles.

Here’s some close ups of the page:
