Blending Inks with Stencils
Today I’m here to share an album by Ronda Pallazzari. If you haven’t seen Ronda’s amazing art, you’re totally missing out. What I love about Ronda’s work is that she uses our stencils to create beautifully colored and blended backgrounds.
Recently, she took a trip to Doha and created this wonderful mini album to create cross between a travel album and an art journal. Here’s a peek into some of her beautiful pages:
See how she uses multiple color mists in each page and the stencil makes it look like it’s blending from pink to orange to yellow? I also love the way the soft background and the black inks offset each other.
To see much more of Ronda’s album click here and if you haven’t used your stencils with multiple sprays to create this blending effect, give it a try! (and if you have, link us up in the comments so we can see!)
Ps: You have two more days to comment for last week’s give away. See you on Friday for another giveaway!

Stencil Hop: Wood Parquet
Ready for another blog hop?! This time Julie’s got three new super talented gals for you to visit. Here’s Julie introducing each:
- Traci Bunkers: Traci is a two-time creative book author: The Art Journal Workshop and Print & Stamp Lab. Her layered pages, full of color, photos, and personal stories are very inspiring. Be sure to check out her shop of artful goodies.
- Marcy Penner: Since stumbling upon Marcy’s blog I’ve become addicted to her clean meets artsy scrapbooking style. Marcy has a cool shop full of fun papercrafting goodies. She is on the design team for October Afternoon.
- Paula Phillips: Paula is an accomplished art journaler. Be sure to check out her ustream channel, where she frequently broadcasts super cool tutorials, and don’t forget about her DVD: Layered & Textured Backgrounds.
These three ladies and Julie Fei-Fan Balzer will be showing off the possibilities of the “wood parquet” stencil:
Julie says “ The Crafter’s Workshop does have a regular woodgrain stencil, which is awesome, but I wanted something more delicate. This stencil has a lacey quality that I really like.” So do we! So here’s one of Julie’s amazing projects with it:
Isn’t it magnificent? This stencil is excellent for both subtle and more drastic effects. See all the projects for a variety of examples!

Using Templates for Backgrounds
If you’re like me and a little hesitant to take the bold step of using our templates on your layouts, today’s post is for you! Instead of featuring the template as a focal image on your layout, you can use it to add color, texture, interest, and layers to your background. Look at this stunning layout by Umenorskan:
Hey beautifully layered page is made even more interesting and colorful by the awesome bits of colors she added with the templates in the background. I can see peeks of Mix & Match Hearts, Cursive Alphabet, and Punchinella.

So if you haven’t tried using templates on your pages yet, this is a wonderful way to dip your toes in. I hope you give it a try and share your pages with us!
Make sure to check out Umenorskan for more information on her stunning page!
Beautiful Ferns with Texture Magic
We were blown away by this absolutely stunning canvas by Teresa Jaye. It’s a perfect example of how you can use our stencils creatively:
To create the stunning ferns in this canvas, Teresa used texture magic with the Peacock Feathers stencil:
Teresa says: “The gorgeous green ferns are made with Delta Creative Texture Magic dimensional paint in Fern Green stippled through a Balzer Designs 6″x6″ template called Mini Peacock Feathers by Crafters Workshop. While the paint was still wet, I sprinkled it with Zing white embossing powder. The embossing powder kind of clumped up on the paint and wouldn’t melt so didn’t do what I expected but I like it!”
Isn’t she super-creative? To see more of this stunning canvas and the great story behind why she created it, make sure to visit Teresa’s blog.
Stencil Hop: Peek-a-Boo
In case you missed it, there was another blog hop yesterday! This time Julie‘s got three super talented gals for you to visit (plus her wonderful blog). Here’s Julie introducing each:
- Jenny Doh: Jenny is an artful creator, collaborator, curator, and crochet-er. She was the long-time Editor-in-Chief of Somerset Studio and now runs the popular website CRESCENDOh.com. She has curated numerous books including Art Saves and Journal It.
- Joanne Sharpe: Joanne and I first met at a CREATE retreat where we were both teachers. She is a wonderful lettering artist. You have probably seen her beautiful stamps from Art Gone Wild. She is teaching at all three CREATE retreats this year (California, Chicago, and New Jersey), so do yourself a favor and take a class from her!
- Ronda Palazzari: Ronda is warm, enthusiastic, energetic, and talented. She recently attended Ranger U. and is a misting maniac. Ronda is the author of the book Art of Layers and on the design teams for Maya Road, Purple Onion, and Sizzix.
These three ladies and Julie Fei-Fan Balzer will be showing off the possibilities of the “peek-a-boo” stencil:
You can probably guess why this stencil is called Peek-a-Boo, can’t you? Yep, it looks like eyes. Julie says at the time she designed it she was actually thinking of Indian textiles, which use a lot of circles and sequins. So here’s Julie’s first amazing project with it:
Isn’t it magnificent?

Using Embossing Powders
Today’s art is for those of you who think our templates can only be used with “messy” mediums like spray inks or paints. Here’s a perfect example of a perfectly clean way to use the triangle template:
This wonderful layout by Ali Edwards combines the triangle template with white embossing powder to create a stunning effect. If don’t want to take out your embossing powder, you could even use the templates with a lighter background and a dark-colored ink pad.
If you want to see the step-by-step instructions for this layout, please visit Ali’s blog. Have you combined ink or embossing powders with your templates? If so, please share in the comments, we would love to see your creations!
