Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I’m showing you a set of mixed media baby cards in a step by step tutorial. Let’s get started!

Step 1:

I started each card by die cutting a rectangle panel two sizes smaller then my card base. On this panel I created my design by first deciding where my sentiment should be stamped (Kaisercraft “Little One” with Archival Ink in “Jet Black”) and then where my stencilled design should go (like the cute animal appeared to be sitting beneath the sunflowers).

For today’s project I used the backside of the stencil of my choice, which is a The Crafter’s Workshop “Sunflower Meadow” (TCW863s) stencil.

TIP: I used the back of the stencil because then I could use the dipped down sunflower above the animal’s head without having to apply modeling paste twice and having to wait in between applications for it to be dry.

Step 2:

Now that I know where my stencil design should go I apply The Crafter’s Workshop “Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste” over the stencil design using a palette knife and set the panel aside to dry.

Step 3:

While the modeling paste is drying I stamped two of the cute images from the Kennedy Grace Creations stamp set called “Sweet Baby Mine” onto Strathmore Bristol Smooth Paper using Versafine “Onyx Black” ink and clear heat embossing afterwards. Then I coloured both images using the following Spectrum Noir Aqua Marker colours: Bud Green, Moss, Heather, Orchid, Sunflower, Gold, Marigold, Aquamarine, Tulip, Crimson, Tan, Charcoal and Jasmine in combination with an aqua-brush.

When the colouring is done and dry I added some highlights using a white Sakura Gelly Roll Pen. I love how these added details bring the image to life. And then I fussy cut the images so they can be added to my project.

Step 4:

Now that the modeling paste is dry I’m ready to add colour to my background. For this I used the “Unicorn Magic Color Burst Trio Set” by Ken Oliver; a colourful set available under The Crafter’s Workshop brand.

I used the “Tangerine” colour from this set as the main colour for the baby boy card and the “Fuchsia” colour as the main colour for my baby girl card. To both cards I added a tiny bit of the “Orchid” colour (this colour is very potent so be careful with it).

I added some of the main colour powder to the card panel and sprayed with water, which makes the colour run. When I liked what I had I dried with my heat tool. This I repeated until I felt the main colour was prominent enough. Then I added a bit of the purple with lots of water, most of the colour I let run of the card panel and then I dried with my heat tool. When needed I added a bit more of the orange or pink colour in the same way. I tried to keep the sentiment as much as possible free of colour.

Step 5:

Now I’m ready to put my cards together! I die cut a slightly larger green rectangle mat from some matching green card stock and adhered both rectangle panels together using liquid glue. This combination I adhered to my white card base using one millimetre thick foam tape and to finish my card I now only have to adhere the animal image on top also using one millimetre thick foam tape.
