Tone on Tone Stenciling + A Video Tutorial

Hi everyone! It’s Lindsay here, from the Crafting While Caffeinated Blog and YouTube Channel, and I am so excited to share another video tutorial with you today. And in that tutorial I’m sharing three different ways to achieve the tone on tone stenciled look! This is such a fun and easy technique that will work for any and all cardmaking styles! You can watch the full video tutorial down below!

Some supplies used in today’s tutorial were sent to me free of charge for design purposes. I only design for companies I stand behind 100%!!

On my first background I used two ink pads, one lighter and one darker. In order to easily choose two colors that work well together, I suggest swatching your ink pads! Also, I applied the lighter color with a brush over the entire panel and the darker color with a sponge through the stencil.

But what if you don’t have a ton of ink pads in different colors and tones? You can easily get the same look with just one ink pad! I used a blue and for the full background I applied the ink with a brush. This creates a lighter wash of color. Then, through the stencil I used a sponge to apply the ink. This creates a bolder more solid color that is much darker than the brushed on color!

For my third card I really wanted to add some dimension and texture. You can do this a few ways. You can use a modeling paste that is the same color if you have one (I like to swatch these, too) but you can create your own custom colors of pastes. I first started by blending the ink onto the cardstock panel. Then, I mixed that same ink into the Light & Fluffy Modeling paste and put it through the Script Words stencil. It will look a little lighter while it’s wet, but once it’s dry it matches the inked background so well!!

I am loving all of these backgrounds and they’re each so easy to do! I hope you have found something that will work for you and your supplies!!
