Hot Foiled Birthday Cards

How to create easy stunning hot foiled card designs

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I’m on the TCW blog with a fun set of birthday cards for which I used The Crafter’s Workshop “Hot Foil Gel”. This stuff is just fabulous (to work with and what effects you can create with it)! Lots of ground to cover, so let’s get started!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

Step 1:

I’m going to create four cards for today’s project: two rectangle ones of which one is from lighter craft coloured card stock and one is from darker craft coloured card stock; and two square ones of which one is from lighter craft coloured card stock and one is from darker craft coloured card stock as well.

I die cut the squares and rectangles in the size that I wanted and on the two rectangle panels I stamped a text background stamp using Versafine “Onyx Black” ink.

Then I applied some The Crafter’s Workshop “Hot Foil Gel” over a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Growing Wild” (TCW824s) using a palette knife and set that aside to dry. You know when the gel is ready for the next step when the gel is complete see through (like in the picture above).

Step 2:

Next I’m going to run the dried Hot Foil Gel pieces through my laminator. Put the foil on top of the gel with the coloured side up. Then wrap the card stock with the Hot Foil Gel and the foil on top between parchment paper / non stick paper for the oven and run it through the machine. Let it cool a bit after you have run in through the machine and then remove the excess foil and ….. instant shiny magic!

I used the following colours of foil:

Therm-O-Web Rebekah Meier Designs “Mixed Media Transfer Foil” in “New Penny” (a light pink colour) and “Vintage Tin” (a warm silver colour), a copper coloured foil from my local craft store and Deco Foil by Therm-O-Web in “Emerald Watercolor” (which is multiple toned, green and gold).

Step 3:

Op top of the foiled background I wanted to add some fun coloured images in the same colour hues as the foils I used. I choose the following stamps: “Dangling Tilda” by Magnolia, “SWE006” by Nellie Snellen, “HM9470” by Marianne Design and “Garden Girl Rose” by StampingBella (use any stamps you have of course).

I choose to colour two of the images with Copic Markers and I used the following colours:

– “SWE006” by Nellie Snellen: E000, R00, R01, E33, E57, YR27, YR18, YR30, W1, W3, E13, Y26, E25, E59 YG03, YG17 and G94. Adding highlights with a white Gelly Roll Pen.

– “HM9470” by Marianne Design: YR30, R00, R01, E000, E42, E44, E89, YG03, YG17, RV00, R81 and RV95. Adding highlights with a white Gelly Roll Pen.

I also choose to colour two of the images with Lindy’s Stamp Gang Products and I used the following colours (adding water to the powders when needed and colouring them with a small brush):

– “Dangling Tilda” by Magnolia: LSG Magicals in “A bit o’Bubbly”, “Fuzzy Navel Peach”, “C’ést la Vie Cerise”, “Sandra Dee Sepia”, “Sidewalk Chalk” and LSG Magical Shaker in “Oom Pah Pah Pink”. Adding highlights with a white Gelly Roll Pen.

– “Garden Girl Rose” by StampingBella: LSG Spray in “Queen of Hearts Red”, LSG Magical Shaker in “Bratwurst Brown”, “Cathedral Pines Green” and “Oom Pah Pah Pink” and LSG Magical in Sidewalk Chalk”. Adding highlights with a white Gelly Roll Pen.

When done with the colouring I fussy cut all the images using my Fiskars scissors. I also die cut some rectangle and square mats in matching colours and slightly larger then the foiled panels.

Then I die cut some sentiments using crème coloured linen textured card stock (the same colour as my card base). I used the following dies: “Hello Sunshine” by Stamplorations and “Happy Birthday Circle Frame” by My Favorite Things.

Step 4:

And now the only thing I have to do is to put my cards together: I adhered each hot foiled panel to their mats using liquid glue and then adhered this combination to the crème coloured card bases. Next I adhered the coloured image and the sentiment on top using one millimetre thick foam tape and Ranger “Glossy Accents”.

I totally love the shine on these foiled cards and the effect on craft coloured card stock is just fabulous!
