How to create a laundry sign for your home

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I’m showing you another fun sign that I created, this one of course is for my laundry room. If you would like to see the sign that I created for my brother, a couple of weeks ago, that you can go HERE!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

How to create a laundry sign for your home

Step 1:

I looked for a piece of wood that would be large enough to fit this stencil, it can also be a softer kind of wood, since it won’t hang outside. Then I asked my father to drill the wholes so that I can add the robe/cord later on to hang the sign from. To prime my wood plaque I then added two layers of The Crafter’s Workshop “White Gesso“ using a brush.

Next I can work on the first layer of texture that I will add to my project: I added two layers of DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint in the colour “Laguna“ using a brush and let that dry well. Then I added one layer of Crackle Medium using a brush and let that dry as well.

When those layers were completely dry I added one layer of Imaginations Crafts Patina Texture Paint in the colour “Verdigris“ and while drying the crackles will appear and you can see the layer underneath through the cracks. I wanted the effect to be subtle so that the added text on top would be well readable, that is why I choose colours that are close together/in the same colour family.

To add more visual texture to my project I next added the design from The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Floral Statement“ (TCW811) using a foam applicator tool and Archival Ink in the colour “Jet Black“. Use the foam applicator tool in an up and down pouncing motion to create a crisp design. Doesn’t this look pretty already?

Step 2:

Now it’s time to add the text to the sign: for this I choose two colours of The Crafter’s Workshop Metallic Modeling Paste that work well together with the teal background I already have. I choose “Antique Gold“ and “Copper Penny“ for this. I started applying the Antique Gold paste over the stencil using a palette knife, leaving gaps for the Copper Penny colour. Then I added the Copper Penny colour, removed the stencil carefully and let the modeling paste dry on it’s own. This The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Laundry“ (TCW2170) makes me giggle somehow, I think it’s quiet funny! And that metallic modeling paste, doesn’t it look fancy on that teal background?

Step 3:

Now that the modeling paste is dry it’s time for my finishing touches: I decided on some clothes-pins for the embellishments and painted six of them with Imagination Crafts Patina Texture Paint in the colour “Cafe Creme“ using a brush and then added some Americana “Laguna“ on top using the dry brushing technique. While they were drying I splattered the project with some watered down Americana Paint in the colour “Warm White“ to break the background a little and make the connection with the clothes-pins.

Now the only thing I have to do to finish my project is to adhere the painted clothes-pins to my project using The Crafter’s Workshop “Gloss Gel Medium“ and a brush (wash your brush afterwards, this gel medium will act as a glue) and when dry adhere the robe/cord to hang the sign with.

And that’s it for today’s fun home decor project. Now I giggle every time I enter the laundry room!
