Art Journal Page: Live Creatively

How to create an art journal page using Gel Press mono prints

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I’m on The Crafter’s Workshop blog with another fun step by step tutorial on how to create an art journal page. For the base of today’s page I used some Gel Press mono prints. I’m working in my Winsor & Newton Heavy Weight Wire-O Sketch Book.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own. This post also contains affiliate links.

If you have never worked with a Gel Press mono printing plate before then I would recommend reading THIS post so you can start with the basics! Be warned: mono printing is very addictive and totally fun!

Step 1

I created a bunch of prints with the Gel Press mono printing plate, acrylic paints in a colour combination that spoke to me and of course some fabulous The Crafter’s Workshop stencils: as you can see in the pictures I created several prints on Rebekah Meier Designs by Therm-O-Web “Mixed Media Art Paper“ and I also kept the A4 printer paper sheets that where used to clean my brayer and stencils of on.

Step 2:

Of the prints that I created on the “Mixed Media Art Paper“ I used the one with the teal/plum colour combination for this project and two A4 size sheet of paper that I used to roll my brayer of on. I totally love the colour combination that I used and also the metallic shine that the metallic acrylic paints left behind!

I used the following The Crafter’s Workshop stencils on today’s project for the mono printing process:

“Posies in a Row“ (TCW2166)

“Stencil Harlequin“(TCW202s)

“Scalopped Mandala “ (TCW775s)

And I used the following paint colours:

– DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint in the colour : “Peacock Teal“;

– DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint in the colour : “Frosted Plum“;

– DecoArt Dazzling Metallics Acrylic Paint in the colour : “Dark Patina“;

– DecoArt Dazzling Metallics Acrylic Paint in the colour : “Champagne Gold“.

Next I decided on which parts of the A4 printer paper sheets I wanted to use for my background and I tore them in the size that I wanted using a ruler (for this particular journal the size of each panel is: 14,5 x 20,5 cm). I adhered the panels to my art journal using The Crafter’s Workshop “Matte Gel Medium“ and a brush (wash the brush afterwards).

Step 3:

Now that I got my background started I tore the “Mixed Media Art Paper“ print that I created before in shapes that appealed to me and I adhered the pieces to my pages with their adhesive back side. I love this Art Paper, it’s the same material as the “Mixed Media Art Tape“ from the same company (that I also love) and it works awesome together with my The Crafter’s Workshop products.

Step 4:

Next I pencilled in the title of my page using first a graphite pencil and when I liked what I had I went over the lines using a black Faber Castell PIT Artist Pen (s). I also used a Derwent Inktense pencil in the colour “Chinese Ink“ and my Pentel Aquabrush to ad more definition to the torn edges of the art journal pages and also the edges of the torn “Mixed Media Art Paper”.

Step 5:

To make my page even more interesting I applied some The Crafter’s Workshop Metallic Modeling Paste in the colour “Marcasite Silver“ over the “Posies in a Row“ stencil that I used before, using a palette knife. I absolutely love what this step does for my page: because I already used this stencil in the background it brings the whole design together and the modeling paste also ads more texture to my project!

And to bring more of the metallic elements to the front of my page I finally decided to splatter with some Pearl Colors by FineTec GmbH in the colour “Moon Gold“ using a brush.

And that finishes today’s fun art journal project!
