Spring Card with Grafix Arts Shrink Film

How to create a fun and easy Spring card using stencils and Grafix Arts Shrink Film

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I would like to show you an awesome product from Grafix Arts and combining this product with a stencilled background to create a spring flower card!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own. This post also contains affiliate links.

Step 1:

To get today’s project started I stamped the “French Marigold – Large“ stamp from Stamplorations onto Grafix Arts “Shrink Film“ in the colour “Super Sanded“ using Archival Ink in the colour “Jet Black“ (you can also use StazOn ink, which is made to adhere on surfaces like plastic, but clean your clear stamps well since this is a solvent based ink).

This shrink film is see through and sanded (as the name indicates) creating a rougher texture that we will use later on, so make sure you stamp on the rougher side of these sheets!

I stamped three of these flowers.

Step 2:

I fussy cut the flowers using my Fiskars scissors, it’s not difficult to cut through the film since it’s not that thick yet! Then I coloured the flower images with my Faber Castell Polychromos coloured pencils. I used the following colours: 126, 217, 112, 165 and 146. The end result will look nicest if you pay a little attention to your highlights and shadows whilst colouring. More colour is shadow, less colour is highlight.

If you have a matching die for your stamped images then you can also use that, in combination with a die cutting and embossing machine (like a Sizzix Big Shot), to cut through the film instead of fussy cutting.

Step 3:

Then you bake the shrink film flowers in the oven according to the instructions on the back of the packaging (the shrink film is non-toxic so you don’t have to worry about that). On this picture you can see how much the film shrinks while baking. In one of the final pictures from this post you can see how thick the film gets after backing and it’s really fun to see the film shrink!

Step 4:

Next I started working on my background: I die cut a stitched rectangle panel from some white card stock and on this panel I created a gradient colour shift from dark yellow to dark red using Distress Inks in the colours “Wild Honey“, “Candied Apple“ and “Fired Brick “ and using foam applicator tools on a craft sheet. I started with the yellow on top of the panel, working inwards and when the paper was saturated I started from the other side with Candied Apple, mixing with the yellow, creating a sunset orange shade, and finishing with the darker red only at the bottom.

When the ink was dry I stamped two of the sentiments from the Clearly Besotted stamp set called “Say What?“ onto this panel several times using Versafine “Onyx Black“ ink. One of the sentiments is going to stay visible after the next step so you should make sure that it’s in a visible spot, on my project the left bottom corner.

Step 5:

Now I die cut three small stitched squares (a little larger then my flowers) from crème coloured linen textured card stock (the same card stock as my card base) and placing them on the coloured panel in the place that I wanted them to be later on. I measured where the modeling paste that I want to ad in this step needs to end (so that you have equal room on either side of the squares) and tape that piece of with some printer paper (in my case about 5 cm measured from the left hand side). Then I place a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Onion Blossoms“ (TCW726s) over the coloured rectangle and over the printer paper and I apply The Crafter’s Workshop “Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste“ (TCW9004) over the stencil with a palette knife, making sure to not go over the sentiment in the left bottom corner.

Then I could take of the stencil and the printer paper and set the panel aside to dry. While drying the modeling paste will absorb some of the ink from the paper.

Step 6:

In this step I splattered some COLIRO Pearlcolors by Finetec GmbH in the colour “Moon Gold“ over the coloured rectangle panel and I stamped parts of the flower stamp that I used to create the flowers embellishments on the edge of my crème coloured linen textured card base and on the little squares (using first and second generation stamping and the same Archival black ink that I used before). I also edged the coloured panel with the same black ink and a foam applicator tool to create a more defined edge.

Step 7:

And then it’s already time to put this card together: I adhered the coloured rectangle to the card base using one millimetre thick foam tape. Then I adhered the squares on the coloured base, also using one millimetre thick foam tape and last but not least I adhered the flowers to the squares using The Crafter’s Workshop “Gloss Gel Medium“ (TCW9006) and let this dry.

And that finishes today’s card project.
