Art Journal Page: Roses are Red

How to create a fun layered art journal page using different techniques

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I’m on The Crafter’s Workshop blog with a fun art journal page, showing you how to use stencils to create a resist background. It’s simple and creates lots of possibilities for your art work.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own. This post also contains affiliate links.

Step 1:

Today I’m working in my Winsor & Newton Heavy Weight Wire-O Sketch Book. I started my project by cutting two watercolour panels in the size that I wanted (which for me is: 14,5 x 20,5 cm for each panel). On the right hand panel I wrote a quote that I found on line, I first pencilled in the quote with my graphite pencil and when I liked the way it looked I went over the lines using a black Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen (s) (when dry this ink is waterproof). I used a calligraphy style that I taught myself as a child.

Step 2:

Now I’m going to create my background design: I placed the gorgeous The Crafter’s Workshop stencil featuring roses, it’s called “Wild Roses“ (TCW799 large), over both panels (those I adhered temporarily on the back with painters tape) and applied VersaMark ink over the stencil using a foam applicator tool, you don’t have to work really fast but the ink needs to be sticky enough to still take the embossing powder when you are ready. Then I applied Ranger “Clear“ embossing powder over the VersaMark ink and heat embossed. This will create a resist (meaning that the colour I will ad in my next step won’t stick to the embossed parts). For the right hand page I used parts of the stencil and repeated the process.

Next I’m going to ad the first colours to my project: you can ad these colours by spraying but I personally prefer adding them with a brush. You apply the green colour with a brush, make the colour run with water and then dry the panel, repeat until you like the result, drying in between layers with a heat tool. Make sure that you don’t heat the area’s where you applied the clear embossing powder too long or you will remelt the powder which causes damage to the end result. On the right hand page I made sure that the colour wasn’t running over the text (if you do accidentally then dab away the colour with a paper kitchen towel. For this particular green colour I used Lindy’s Stamp Gang “Frosty Forest Green“ Starburst Spray.

When I was happy with the way the green looked I added additional splatters with Lindy’s Stamp Gang “Grab a Guy Gold“ Starburst Spray, applying the splatters with a brush. Then set that aside to dry.

Step 3:

Now I’m going to create the dimensional roses that will be the top layer of the page: for this I mixed some of the Lindy’s Stamp Gang “Autumn Maple Crimson“ Starburst Spray with some of The Crafter’s Workshop “Clear Modeling Paste”, this way I’ll create my own homemade coloured modeling paste, which is totally fun to do. The consistency of the mixture should still be a modeling paste, not a paint!

This homemade paste I apply over the smaller version of the roses stencil that I used before (TCW779 small) mixing it on the stencil with a little of the beautiful The Crafter’s Workshop “Grecian Gold Metallic Modeling Paste“ for a less flat result. If you don’t want to contaminate your colours too much then I would suggest using two palette knifes. I created several pieces of the roses this way on smaller pieces of paper and let them dry.

When the modeling paste was dry I fussy cut the roses out leaving a small white border. This is such a fun technique, if you haven’t tried this yet then I can really recommend it.

Step 4:

While the roses are drying I work on some of the other elements for my project: I didn’t wanted to cover the background up completely so I choose to work on a piece of Therm O Web “Mixed Media sheet“, this is a beautiful translucent paper that can handle a lot. I applied some Archival Ink in the colour “Cobalt“ over a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Tangled Vine“ (TCW759s) using a foam applicator tool. When the ink was dry I tore the paper creating a frayed edge around the leaves design.

Step 5:

To ad back in some of the green from my background I also created some single leaves with the same Tangled Vine stencil that I used before. I applied some Archival Ink in the colour “Library Green“ over pieces of scarp paper, using a foam applicator tool, and when the ink was dry I fussy cut the leaves to ad to my project.

Step 6:

Now that all the elements are ready I’m going to put my project together: I created a design on the left hand panel that I prepared earlier on and adhered all the elements using Therm O Web “Mixed Media Adhesive“.

Then I edged the panels with the same Archival blue ink that I used before and using a foam applicator tool. I also splattered some of the pinkish red Lindy’s Spray on the project using a brush and let that dry.

Then I adhered the completed panels to my art journal using The Crafter’s Workshop “Matte Gel Medium“ (TCW9011) and let that dry a bit.

And for my finishing touches I added in some accents with my white Gelly Roll Pen (to create definition between the layers of leaves and roses) and my black Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen (to highlight the roses in the background a bit more) and I edged around the entire page using Memento  “Lilac Posies “ ink using a foam applicator tool.
