Mixed Media Tags with Karenliz

Hi Everyone! Today I’m going to show you how I use stencils to create these mixed media tags.

Supplies: Stencils:  TCW773 Connected Dots, TCW764 Number Scramble, TCW756 Magic Ladder, TCW785 Ornate Borders, TCW725 Wild Blooms, TCW774 Tuscan Floral. Pastes and Gels: Champagne Gold Modeling Paste, Marcasite Silver Modeling Paste, White Pearl Modeling Paste, Black Modeling Paste, Matte Gel Medium. Paper scraps and ephemera. TCW White and Black Gesso.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with stencils and mediums to create this project.

The opinions I share are solely my own because I do love to use them.

Still with me after that long list? Yes, I use lots of stencils and pastes to create my tags. Can I tell you a secret? There is no method to my madness when I’m creating these tags.

I have a drawer in my art room full of scrap paper and ephemera. Lots of it. When it gets full and I can’t close the drawer I have to throw some of it out.  With two tags on my table I search through the drawer and pull out what I like.

I would say 85% of the time I pull based on color. Whatever my mind is liking at the time. I pull each piece out and lay it on my table around my tags.

If you look closely I’ve pulled purples and blues for the tag on the right and pinks and yellows for the tag on the left. It doesn’t necessarily mean I’m going to stick with those colors but it all gives me options.  I put a few pieces back in the drawer and then I throw all that on the floor so I can see it all. Yes, the floor. This is how I create most of the time.

I start the tags by painting them with white and black gesso and then adding some color. I dry it with my heat gun and continue.

I start using the modeling pastes to add the stencils to the tags.

I work on both tags at the same time. While one is drying I work on the other or add paper scraps to one and rub-ons to the other.  Here I added a piece of a napkin to the top and although it covered some of the stencil it added another layer of texture to the tag.

On the bottom of this tag I added paper scraps, paint, rub-ons and I scribbled with a white gel pen.

To finish this tag I painted some fabric flowers, more stencils (Ornate Borders) and those little plastic things are from the inside of a silk flower.

The second tag I added more of the Wild Blooms stencil on the side of the tag and the bottom. I added white and green paint to the side and added more scribbles.

Again I added more paper scraps, rub-ons, paint, etc. to finish the tag.  The more you look the more you see.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. You can see all the new stencils and Mixed Media Metallic Modeling Pastes on Scrapbook.com.

We would love to see what you create with The Crafters Workshop Stencils and Mediums. You can share it with us on our Facebook pageInstagram, Twitter, and Pinterest using hashtag #tcwstencillove.
