Reindeer Christmas Cards

How to create masculine Christmas cards

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today I would like to show you a set of fun Christmas cards that I feel are very suitable for the men in your life. I created three different colour/material options so that you can choose the one that you like best or the one that fits the materials that you already own.

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

How to create masculine Christmas cards

I’ll start with creating the reindeer itself. For this I die cut one black rectangle and two crème coloured rectangles using one of the dies in the My Favorite Things “Stitched Rectangle STAX“ die set. Then I took a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Trendy Images“ (TCW739s) and put some tape runner on the top part of the deer, taking some of the sticky of with my fingers (this way you don’t tear the paper when you take the stencil of the paper) and then I placed the stencil over the black rectangle (because the top part of the reindeer is very intricate this will make sure that when you apply the paste it will not seep underneath the stencil and you create nice crisp lines).

Next I applied some of the Nuvo Glimmer Paste in the colour “Golden Crystal“ over the stencil using a palette knife and when you take of the stencil you have this gorgeous reindeer shape. Set this black panel aside to dry. If you find this easier you can tape of the other images on the stencil using regular tape. When you’re done you can carefully take off the tape (this way you don’t get smudges of the other designs from this stencil on your reindeer piece).

On the two crème coloured rectangles I used ink in stead of glimmer paste. For the red reindeer I used Distress Inks in the colours “Fired Brick“ and “Aged Mahogany“ and for the brown reindeer I used Distress Ink in the colour “Walnut Stain“ and Memento Ink in the colour “Espresso Truffle“. I applied the inks with a foam applicator tool.

While the reindeer are drying I’m working on the background panels: for this design I used one of the patterns from a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Tufted“ (TCW747s). The particular one that I used for this card makes me think of a warm knitted sweeter, perfect for a Christmas card!

First I die cut one black and two crème coloured rectangle panels using one of my larger stitched rectangle nesting die sets.

For the first crème panel I prepared my own coloured modeling paste by mixing some of The Crafter’s Workshop Heavy Body acrylic Paint in the colour “Candy Apple Red“ (TCW9019) with The Crafter’s Workshop “Clear Modeling Paste“ (TCW9008) (1/4 to 3/4) on my craft sheet. Then I place the stencil over one corner lengthwise and I apply the coloured modeling paste over the stencil. You can use a piece of Post It note to protect the edge. When dry you turn the panel around and take the other long side and apply paste over the same stencil design. When dry you do the short sides one after the other. You can help dry the modeling paste with a Heat It tool a bit but be careful you don’t want to create bubbles, so don’t heat it to long in the same spot.

On the other crème coloured panel I used the same technique but now I used the two brown inks from the first step to create the background design. And on the black panel I used Nuvo Glimmer Paste in the colour “Silver Gem“. The glimmer paste makes these cards sparkly but not over the top, more like manly Christmassy!

And of course then we also need a sentiment: for today’s cards I used two sentiments from a Lili of the Valley stamp set called “Christmas Handwritten Phrases”. I stamped one of the sentiments twice on black card stock using VersaMark ink and heat embossing one with Wow Embossing Powder in the colour “Opaque Vanilla White“ and one with Stampendous “Detail White“ embossing powder. On a crème coloured piece of card stock I also stamped one of the other sentiments with Versafine “Onyx Black“ ink. Next I die cut three banner shapes using the middle sized die in the Lawn Fawn  “Everyday Sentiment Banners“ die set.

Then it’s already time to put these cards together:

For the gold glitter reindeer card I used a matching red linen textured card base and some craft coloured mats. I adhered the reindeer on the first mat with liquid glue and also adhered the larger rectangle mats this way. I adhered the smaller combined rectangle mats to the larger combined rectangle mats using one millimetre thick foam tape and some 3D kit (because of the modeling paste) and I also used the one millimetre thick foam tape to adhere the larger mats this way to the red card base The sentiment is also adhered using one millimetre thick foam tape and some 3D kit. And then the first card is finished.

For the red reindeer card I also used a red linen textured card base and I used dark green mats.

For the brown reindeer card I used a craft coloured card base and some light blue mats.

And that finishes today’s manly Christmas card project!

I hope you enjoyed and I wish you all a creative day!
