Sending Butterflies

Easy handmade card using TCW Flutterby Stencil and Dry Embossing Technique. DT Heidi

Hi everyone, Heidi here, today is my first post as a member of The Crafter’s Workshop design team. I’m thrilled to be here and I hope to bring you lots of fun projects in the upcoming months.

Today I would like to show you how to create a set of cards using the so called “dry embossing with stencils” technique. When I think about stencils I usually also think about paints, inks or embossing paste, for today’s technique you don’t need any of these products! What you do need is a die cutting/embossing machine.

And the best part about this technique is: everybody can do this, no particular skills are needed!

The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.

——————————–

So, let’s get started: I die cut a panel with one of my square nesting dies and using a Big Shot die cutting/embossing machine (there are many machines like this one on the market, use the machine you have). With my next step in mind I choose a card stock that is not coloured through and through: it’s a craft coloured card stock with a thin layer of colour on one side (in my case dark brown for the first card and red for the second card).

My next step is the dry embossing technique: for this step it’s important that you test what “sandwich” your die cutting/embossing machine needs. For my Big Shot I used the following sandwich: use Tab 1 of the Multipurpose Platform, layer the (black) Impressions Pad, the (black) Silicone Rubber, the card stock, the stencil you want to use and 1 cutting plate. Think up front on which side of the card stock you are going to dry emboss, for my first card I used one side (the butterflies have kept the brown colour of the card stock) and for the second card I used the other side (the butterflies are sanded down).

For today’s card I used a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil called “Flutterby” (TCW206), because I love butterflies and they also create an interesting background to look at.

After dry embossing I sanded the paper down with sandpaper on a block and that makes these gorgeous butterflies suddenly pop. I also edged this panel with Memento “Espresso Truffle” ink! I didn’t wanted to cover up this beautiful background more then needed so I decided on only adding a sentiment and some sparkle. I choose a word die from Simon Says Stamp called “Sending” and a stamp set from Winnie & Walter called “Sending you”.

For the first card I die cut the word “Sending” from some mat gold card stock and I also die cut a banner from some matching pink card stock using the smallest die in the Lawn Fawn “Everyday Sentiment Banners” die set. I stamped “giant hugs” with Memento “Tuxedo Black” ink on this banner and edged the banner with Memento “Lilac Posies” ink.

I also die cut a slightly larger square from the same pink card stock that i used for the banner, edging this panel with the same pink ink as I used for the banner. Next I adhered both squares together using liquid glue. I wrapped the sentiment banner around the right hand side and adhered to the back using regular tape. Then I foam taped the combined squares to an olive green linen textured card base with one millimetre thick foam tape and I also edged this card base with Distress Ink in the colour “Pumice Stone”. I feel that the extra edging of each panel creates a bit more definition and it also gives this card an extra finishing touch.

For my other finishing touches I adhered the die cut word sentiment above the banner slipping the S underneath and the G on top of the banner. The banner is a little raised on the left side to create a more dimensional feel. And I also added some sparkle by adding some sequins: I used Cartwrights Sequins in “Satin Dark Chartreuse”, “Satin Light Chartreuse” and “Metallic Razzleberry” in different sizes.

And that finishes this first card.

For my second card I didn’t edge the panels additionally because I felt that the black card stock created sufficient contrast. I adhered the red butterfly panel to a black slightly larger die cut square panel using liquid glue. Next I created to banners using the largest and the smallest die in the Lawn Fawn die set that I also used before, the smallest banner I die cut from black card stock and the larger from vellum. On the smallest one I heat embossed with Ranger “White Super Fine Detail Embossing Powder” one of the sentiments from the “Sending you” stamp set and the vellum banner is left as it is for now. I also die cut another “Sending” die cut element from some dark turquoise/green card stock.

I wrapped the banners around the right hand side and adhered them with see through tape runner and then adhered the word die cut sentiment on top.

For the finishing touches on this card I used Pretty Pink Posh sequins in “Sparkling Clear”, Cartwrights Sequins in “Metallic Gray” and some metallic red sequins from my stash in different sizes.

And that finishes today’s set of cards using the dry embossing technique. I had a lot of fun using this stencil in a more “non-traditional” way and I hope you like this technique too!

I wish everyone a creative day!
