Insulated lunch bag

I got this brilliant idea to make an insulated lunch bag for work and thought it would be fun to share the process with you all. But, let’s be honest…I am not a seamstress! I just happen to have a sewing machine that I stick stuff into to sew on. So sharing the sewing part of this bag is going to consist of links to the Youtube videos that I found most helpful. However, what I can share with you, is how I created the design for the  canvas I used…

An insulated lunch bag created using stencils from The Crafter's Workshop • AtopSerenityHill.comI decided to use primed canvas that comes in pad form from Fredrix for my fabric. In hindsight, it would have been easier to use unprimed canvas or muslin. For my lining, I went with Oly-Fun multi-purpose craft material since it is water-resistant. The insulated part of the lunch bag is Insul-Bright®. And, of course, stencils!

  1. Adding leaves with the 12×12 Jungle Vines stencil and bright green acrylic paint.
  2. Adding subtle butterflies with the 12×12 Butterfly Trail stencil, first with orange paint, then white slightly off-center.
  3. Using a darker green acrylic paint and an angle brush to add grasses at the bottom of my design. I then add dots of white “flowers” to the grasses.
  4. Using the 12×12 Party Lights stencil and black for the focal point.

I used YouTube videos to help me design and sew the lunch bag together. I did a lot of winging it but I found this video and this video the most helpful!
