Mixed Media Card with Love

For me making something by hand creates a personal connection that something store bought just doesn’t have. I know Valentines Day is over and we are well into March but I think love notes can be sent all year! So lets get started and send a little love into the world!

I love the delicate details in this new stencil (TCW699 Prismascope by Rebekah Meier) from The Crafters Workshop and I thought it would just be perfect paired with a bit of their amazing Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste! For this project I also used:

Strathmore Printmaking Card
A Palette Knife
Faber Castell Pit Pens
Bits of Scrap Painted Paper
Hole Punch
Scissors
Bonus Item *Glimmer Mist – Tutti Frutti

First step it to cover your work area so you don’t spread your modeling paste on your table. I like to use a scrap sheet for this because then I have a colorful and textural piece of paper to use in my work at a later date. I placed my Stencil (TCW699 Prismascope) where I wanted it on the card and scooped about a quarter size worth of Modeling Paste up with my palette knife and spread it with a very light hand over my stencil. I was extra careful to go slowly and hold my stencil firmly in place so I could get crisp lines.

Once I finished applying the modeling paste I slowly removed my stencil. I love how it turned out!! I ran strait to the sink so I could wash my stencil and my tool in warm water and then I set my card aside for it to dry. (I left it for about 4 hours)

While the modeling paste was drying I looked through my scrap papers. I was looking for some interesting marks and a color that said “love”. I save all of my mark making and painting experiment sheets so I always have a fun stash of options when I am looking for that special addition to a project. I placed the TCW713 Birds on Branches stencil over my painted page and moved it around until I thought I had an interesting texture and color combination peeking through.

I lightly traced the bird with a pencil and then used scissors to cut it out. I easily erased the pencil lines and had a perfect little paper cut bird for my card! I also used a standard hole punch to make some colorful little confettii dots to match my bird.

I checked to make sure my Modeling paste was completely dry and then I glued down my bird and my confetti dots and added a bit of shimmer with some painted bits of Gold Gesso.

Next up was a bit of hand lettering. I love to mix the style and thickness of my letters to add a bit of interest. I also placed it in the top left corner because the bird draws your eye to that area and is looking at the words which ads emphasis to the sentiment. I love this card just the way it is with the delicate white on white with bits of color, but I am always looking to experiment and push things a bit further so I decided to grab one of my new Glimmer Mists – Tutti Frutti from Canvas Corp. Brands and added a few sprays for an extra touch of color and dimension.

My finished card is below, I sprayed on the Glimmer Mist – Tutti Frutti and then used a paper towel to dab up a bit of the color so my dimensional modeling paste area would stay a bit more white and the card itself would take on a bit more of the color. I love the delicate “pink” and the organic nature of the spray in juxtaposition with the clean lines of the TCW699 Prismascope stencil.
