Hello folks, Nancy here, and welcome to a tutorial for a fun, easy and, dare I say, meditative mixed media piece. I always like to find new ways to utilize the fabulous stencils from The Crafter’s Workshop, and pairing them with gesso to create a resist is a technique I enjoy.
The Crafter’s Workshop provided me with some product to create this project. The opinions I share are solely my own.
Supplies used:
12″ x 12″ La Artista stencil TCW645
6″ x 6″ Mini Chica Words TCW650S
140 lb watercolor paper
paint brush, foam brush
baby wipes
heat tool
acrylic paint: aqua, citron, deep periwinkle
masking tape
Signo black gel pen
**********************************
Place La Artista stencil on watercolor paper, and with a paintbrush, apply white gesso completely over the image. Dry with heat tool.
Using foam brushes, apply acrylic paint in three different colors and blend with baby wipes. The acrylic paint will not adhere to the gessoed image as it acts as a resist. Dry with heat tool.
Right about now you’re wondering what on earth is meditative about this project. Well, here we go. Using a black gel pen, trace around the image completely. Fill in all spaces, except Frida’s facial features, with Zentangle doodles. This process of doodling in all types of patterns, can be quite relaxing and yes, meditative.
Add “hola” message with Mini Chica Words stencil and black gel pen. Use masking tape to secure stencil to watercolor paper.
I hope that you’ll try a little meditative doodling. The Crafter’s Workshop stencils can be the perfect vehicle to starting you on your way to Zentangling!
