Hey there! It’s me, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer!
I was absolutely delighted and honored when Tim Holtz asked me to participate in the Ranger Designer Challenge this year. We were each given a Dina Wakley Media Board and a set of the new TIm Holtz Distress Crayons. Our only instructions were that it had to be vertical and it had to feature the Distress Crayons. Of course I used a brand new Balzer Designs stencil to create my design!
The background and the pattern on the butterflies were created using my new Orange Slices stencil.
Instead of paint splats I used tiny black rhinestones from my stash. They’re so old that they didn’t have adhesive on the back. I had to glue each one individually!
Stacks and stacks of foam adhesive went into making this project happen. I really wanted the butterflies to pop right off the canvas and into flight!
I even unearthed some black foam adhesive for my text. I don’t think it means you can’t see the foam adhesive, but it does make it slightly less obvious.
I love how easy stencils make creating something wonderful. Whenever I get a new medium (such as Distress Crayons) I immediately try to think of how it can be used with stencils! And notice that I used both the 6×6 and 12×12 sizes of the Orange Slices stencil. An easy way to create rhythm in any project — repeat the design!
I hope you’ll stop by my instagram and YouTube channel to see more stenciling projects!
