Expressing your Faith with Mixed Media

Hello Creatives!

TCW Design Team Member, Keri Sallee, here.

Today, I want to share with you a recent mixed media canvas I made.

For those of you who know me in the “real”world, you know that my first creative love has always been music. It’s what I went to college for and it always speaks to me. Recently, my church worship team has started doing a song called “Jesus at the Center” and the lyrics have been speaking to me for weeks. As an artist, I decided to express what I was feeling onto a canvas.

Here’s what I came up with:

TCW_Jesus Be the Center_Full Project_markedTo make this project, I used these 4 TCW stencils:

From Top left, going clockwise:

TCW361-Tiny Circles

TCW551-Spiral Staircase

TCW525S-Screen Print

TCW 550S-Thoughts

I started with a textured background of Liquitex Heavy Body Paint

Once this was dry, I added a heavier layer of paint in the middle with a  pallet knife and used my stencil with Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Texture Luxe, Adirondack Ink and Heidi Swapp Color Shine:

Next, I added a heart, drawn free-handed and cut from Christy Tomlinson’s paper by Pink Paislee, black Gelatos and then added more Texture Luxe using my Tiny Circles Stencil:

I added my words. (sorry…I don’t have a pic of that one!)

To make my “rays” I center the Spiral Staircase Stencil and used my Faber Castell PITT Artist marker to follow the outward “rays” of the stencil:

I filled in the alternating “rays” with Tattered Angels Glam for color and sparkle. I also connected the rays with my PITT Artist Marker and smeared the lines to keep them less harsh. I also outlined and smeared the marker around my words.

To finish my piece, I used my palette knife again and scrapped my various colors of acrylic paint along the edges.

Here is a few close-ups of the texture and background my stencils added:

I hope you enjoyed today’s project and it inspires you to express your faith through your art.
