60’s Vera-Style Wall Hanging

Hello! Tami Sanders here with a home decor project to show you today.

I am infatuated with vintage; I love ephemera, buttons, sewing bits, fabrics, old notebooks, postcards, jewelry, greeting cards, pottery and the list goes on and on and ON! One of the categories on my list are textiles designed by Vera. And no – probably not the Vera you are thinking about {although I own plenty of her goodies too!} I’m talking about Vera Neumann. If you like vintage items like scarves, tableclothes and napkins, you may be familiar with her trademark signature – Vera, with a cute little ladybug beside it.

Vera Neumann designed lots of different patterns in various styles, but she did lots of flowers, free flowing flowers, sometimes with loose outlines like the tulips on these napkins…

The Crafter’s Workshop TCW433 Wildflowers stencil brought Vera’s designs to mind…

So I decided to create a project inspired by her work. I started with a plain burlap placemat that I found for $2. First I added a background pattern using the TCW431 Ripples stencil and inks.

Then I added the flowers using the TCW433 Wildflowers stencil to create another layer to the background. Next, I moved the stencil slightly up and to the right and filled in the design using white acylic paint.

Once the paint dried, I once again, inked in the flowers. They were brighter than the previously inked flowers since they were added on top of the white paint.

The designs were then loosely outlined using a black fine tip permanent pen.

The TCW467s Mini Live, Love, Laugh stencil was used to add the verse to the wall hanging. Molding Paste was used for the large print words and ink for the smaller print. When the paste was dry, Smooch Accent Ink was used to paint the letters, and then they were outlined with the black pen.

I cut off the bottom of the mat, applied large black pom pom trim and a black grossgrain ribbon to hang it from.

Here are some pics of the project…

Don’t worry if the white paint bleeds a little bit, it adds to the style! The inks were heat set between steps. Use blue painter’s tape or masking tape to hold both the mat and the stencil to your work surface to best results.

  1. Your wall hanging is so creative! I especially like how you made the flowers look different with & without the white paint.
